The Federal Government of Somalia has announced that the country is moving forward with the implementation of a One Person, One Vote electoral system.
In a press release issued in Mogadishu on 15 May 2026, the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism said the government is fulfilling its constitutional responsibility to ensure citizens are given the right to vote and to be elected.
The Federal Government stated that Somalia has entered a crucial stage in its democratic transition, with preparations underway for elections based on the principle of One Person, One Vote.
According to the statement, the government has been holding continuous consultations with electoral stakeholders and different sections of Somali society to listen to their views and recommendations.
The statement also noted that, over the past three days, government officials held discussions with some opposition members. However, the government said some of the proposals presented during the talks were contrary to the fundamental rights of citizens to vote and to be elected.
The Federal Government reaffirmed that the country will proceed with free, fair, transparent, and constitutional elections, in line with Somalia’s laws and the political program previously pledged by the government.
At the same time, the government stressed that the door remains open for dialogue and consultation with all stakeholders.
The announcement comes amid ongoing political discussions over Somalia’s electoral process and the country’s transition toward direct elections
