The Director General of Somalia’s National Centre for Prevention and Countering Violent Extremism, TUBSAN, Mr. Ali Yasin Gurbe, on Monday received a high-level delegation from the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) unit of the Italian contingent at the Serendi Rehabilitation Centre for defectors.
The visiting delegation is part of the European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM-S), and their visit focused on assessing the overall condition of the centre, reviewing its operational needs, and exploring ways to further support its rehabilitation programmes.
During the meeting, discussions centred on the general situation of former combatants undergoing rehabilitation at the Serendi Centre and on practical measures to strengthen the services provided to them. Officials from the CIMIC delegation expressed readiness to support the continued development of the facility and pledged assistance in key areas aimed at improving both infrastructure and rehabilitation outcomes.
Among the commitments highlighted during the visit were plans for the renovation and maintenance of the centre’s infrastructure, as well as support for vocational training programmes that can equip beneficiaries with practical skills for independent living. The training areas identified include tailoring, welding, and agricultural production, all of which are expected to play a critical role in helping participants rebuild their lives.
The visit also marked the official launch of a new vocational training programme designed specifically for defectors undergoing rehabilitation. The initiative aims to provide young people with new opportunities for self-reliance and productive engagement, while reducing the risk of their return to extremist groups.
Officials said the programme forms part of a broader effort to ensure comprehensive reintegration by giving participants the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to re-enter society as active and peaceful citizens. The initiative reflects a growing focus on long-term rehabilitation, one that goes beyond counselling and care to include economic empowerment and social reintegration.
The Serendi Rehabilitation Centre remains one of Somalia’s key institutions for supporting former members of armed groups who choose to disengage and rejoin society. Through structured programmes that combine education, awareness-building, psychosocial support, and community reintegration, the centre has continued to serve as an important platform for restoring hope and rebuilding lives.
TUBSAN, which has been expanding its role in promoting peace and preventing violent extremism, said it remains committed to enhancing rehabilitation efforts through modern and effective approaches. The institution has increasingly embraced models that integrate training, public awareness, and social support in order to create lasting pathways away from violence.
The visit by the Italian CIMIC delegation underscores the importance of international partnership in Somalia’s efforts to promote stability, support rehabilitation, and offer vulnerable youth a second chance. It also reflects the shared commitment of Somali institutions and international partners to invest in recovery programmes that contribute to peace, resilience, and national development.
