Click, Apply, Enter: Somalia Joins the Global E-Visa Club

The Somali Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA) has on 28th of August 2025 officially launched a new E-Visa/eTAS service, marking a significant step in the nation’s efforts to modernize its immigration procedures. The new system, which will become mandatory for all foreign arrivals starting September 1, 2025, positions Somalia alongside other nations that have adopted advanced electronic visa technology.

The new service can be accessed and applied for electronically through the ICA’s official website. According to Mr. Isaaq Hassan Taakow, Director of Foreigners and Immigration, the system has been under development for an extended period to ensure a seamless and efficient process. “This modern system will make it easier for foreigners to apply for a visa from anywhere in the world and receive it within a short time,” said Mr. Taakow, who added that dedicated staff have been trained to handle applications with speed and transparency.

Mr. Mustafa Duhulow, the Director-General of the ICA, hailed the launch as a historic stride for Somalia. He emphasized that the new system showcases the country’s readiness to align with modern international standards. The e-Visa initiative is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening national security, protecting data, stimulating economic growth, and streamlining travel services.

“We will now have access to passenger information before individuals even enter the country, and we have put in place systems that allow us to monitor and track all applicants. We will also be able to verify the details of anyone applying for a visa, regardless of where they are in the world. On the financial side, all visa-related revenue will be consolidated in a single system, which will contribute to stronger economic growth for the nation,” said Mustafa Duhulow, Director General of the Immigration and Citizenship Authority (ICA).

Director General Mustafa Duhulow reassured Somali citizens that there is no need to fear the newly introduced e-visa system, encouraging them instead to embrace it and apply online. He emphasized that the ICA will provide clear guidance on how to submit applications.

“I urge all Somalis not to be concerned about the e-visa system. I encourage you to apply, and we will demonstrate the entire process to ensure it is accessible to everyone. Today marks a historic milestone, and I firmly believe that for every Somali who wishes to see their country progress, this initiative will serve as a source of encouragement and pride. We are confident that our people will stand with us in supporting this step forward,” he added.

Minister of Internal Security, Mr. Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, affirmed that the e-Visa system will be the sole method of entry for foreigners as of September 1. The Minister highlighted the system’s importance for monitoring who enters the country and ensuring financial accountability. All visa fees, he noted, will be directly deposited into the Ministry of Finance’s accounts, enhancing the transparency and efficiency of revenue collection.

“The e-Visa system comes with several key advantages. First and foremost, it strengthens national security and enhances border control. By requiring travelers to submit their information in advance —who they are, why they are applying for a visa, and what their purpose in Somalia is — we will have the ability to verify all details before they arrive in the country. This will significantly contribute to safeguarding our nation. It will play a major role in increasing state revenue and boosting the national economy. Most importantly, it ensures greater financial transparency by eliminating corruption and irregular practices. The efficiency it introduces will be a game-changer for our financial management,” said Minister Abdullahi Fartaag.

The ICA also clarified that certain groups will be exempt from the eTAS requirements. This includes individuals holding multiple-entry visas or residency permits, diplomats, UNLP passport holders, and citizens from countries that have existing free movement agreements with Somalia. The new e-Visa system is a significant move forward, symbolizing Somalia’s commitment to both security and economic development.

Across the world, e-visa and electronic travel authorization systems have become a hallmark of modern governance and international mobility. From Kenya to Turkey, India to the United States, governments are increasingly turning to digital solutions to balance openness with security, enabling smoother entry for genuine travelers while safeguarding against risks. Somalia’s adoption of this technology signals its readiness to align with international best practices and position itself as a responsible partner in global travel and security.

In essence, the launch of Somalia’s e-visa system is more than a technical upgrade — it is a declaration of intent. It tells the world that Somalia is moving toward greater transparency, accountability, and integration into the global community. By embracing this digital leap, Somalia not only strengthens its borders but also opens new doors for trade, tourism, investment, and stronger international cooperation.
