The President of the Republic of Djibouti, Mr. Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, officially launched the “Salaam City” project yesterday, Monday. It is a major modern housing development being implemented by Salaam Real Estate, with a total cost of $480 million, equivalent to 85 billion Djiboutian francs.
The launch ceremony was held at the project site in the Nagaad district, located on the outskirts of the capital. President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh toured the first three completed houses and also took part in laying the foundation stone marking the beginning of the largest phase of the project. This phase will include more than 7,000 housing units spread across 2.4 million square metres of land.
Salaam Real Estate, the company overseeing the implementation, said that Salaam City is a large mixed-use housing project designed in the form of a modern city. It will include fully integrated services such as seven schools, a hospital and modern health centres, mosques, commercial centres, offices, entertainment areas, public parks, and spaces designated for sports and exercise.
The General Manager of Salaam Real Estate, Mustafe Liibaan, said the project is part of Djibouti’s economic transformation. He noted that Salaam City has been designed to respond to that change by not only building houses, but also creating an inclusive community where families can access quality homes, modern services, and a safe environment.
Meanwhile, the Manager of Salaam African Bank, Jaamac Xirsi, said the bank will facilitate access to housing through an Islamic finance system, allowing families of different income levels to benefit and afford the purchase of homes.
Officials said the project will create up to 2,000 jobs during the construction phase, with the first residents expected to move in by 2028. Djibouti has invested heavily in ports, railways, and logistics infrastructure over the past decade, as part of President Djibouti’s Vision 2035, which aims to strengthen the country’s economy.
Finally, President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh said that providing quality housing, creating job opportunities, and building modern and inclusive communities are steps that directly invest in the wellbeing of the people and the future of the nation. He noted that the Salaam City project is an example of those efforts.
