Somali Embassy Hosts New UNODC Regional Representative for Talks on Security Cooperation

The Embassy of Somalia in Nairobi hosted Mr. Ali El-Bereir, the newly appointed Regional Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

During a meeting between Mr. Ali El-Bereir and Ambassador Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, discussions focused on key priority areas and the future direction of cooperation, particularly in combating drugs and crime across East and Central Africa.
The meeting reflected a shared understanding of the evolving security situation in the Horn of Africa and the importance of strengthening cooperation between both sides to address cross-border crimes.

“We spoke openly about the security situation in our region and the urgent need to reinforce cooperation in order to confront transnational crimes, ranging from illicit trafficking to organized criminal networks that threaten the stability of neighboring countries,” the statement noted.

UNODC has long been a close partner of Somalia, supporting efforts to strengthen judicial institutions, build the capacity of law enforcement agencies, and advance maritime security and anti-piracy initiatives. These efforts have played an important role in reinforcing the rule of law and improving the security of the Somali people.

“We agreed to further strengthen this solid foundation and explore new, practical initiatives with real impact — enhancing justice systems, promoting accountability, and protecting communities in Somalia and across the wider region,” said Ambassador Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle.
