President Guelleh Receives International Observer Delegations Ahead of April 10 Presidential Election



DJIBOUTI – The President of the Republic and candidate for re-election, His Excellency Ismail Omar Guelleh, on Wednesday morning received the heads of international observer delegations for Djibouti’s presidential election scheduled for April 10, 2026, at the Palace of the Republic.


President Guelleh held separate meetings with the heads of delegations from the African Union, Mr. Bertrand Makuza; IGAD, Dr. Mulatu Teshome; and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Mr. Shakir Mahmoud Bander.
The discussions focused on key electoral matters, including Djibouti’s preparedness to conduct the vote in line with international standards, the status of voter registration, procedures for validating candidacies, and fairness in access to official media and airtime.


The presence of these high-level observer missions reflects the significance of the upcoming election and the strong international attention it has attracted. The delegations are led by distinguished public figures with extensive political and diplomatic experience, including former Ethiopian President Dr. Mulatu Teshome and former Rwandan Prime Minister Mr. Bertrand Makuza.


The meetings also highlighted Djibouti’s commitment to transparency and credibility in the electoral process, as the country prepares for a presidential vote under the watch of respected regional and international organizations.


Also present at the event were the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Abdoukader Houssein Ali; the Secretary General of the Presidency, Mr. Mohamed Abdillahi Waiss; and the Diplomatic Adviser to the Head of State, Mrs. Fathia Djama Oudine.
