Senior Adviser to Somalia’s President Resigns, Warns of Political Instability

The Senior Adviser to the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has today officially announced his resignation from his position at Villa Somalia.

In a statement, he said he made the decision after considering the serious political challenges and deadlock facing the country, which he warned could lead to political and security instability. The resignation comes at a sensitive time in Somalia’s political landscape, as debate continues over elections, the mandate of elected institutions, and the way forward during the transitional period.

The outgoing adviser said he will soon share with the Somali public his detailed views on possible solutions to the political crises facing the country during the transition period.

He specifically noted that the mandate of elected government institutions is set to expire on May 15, 2026, with less than 20 days remaining.

The move is likely to increase political pressure on Villa Somalia at a time when the Federal Government is already facing growing political tensions. Villa Somalia has not yet publicly responded to the resignation or to the concerns raised by the departing official.

The development comes as Somalia approaches a critical political moment that could shape the country’s electoral process, political stability, and national security.
