The Upper House of Somalia’s Federal Parliament has officially approved the new members of the National Human Rights Commission, following a vote held during today’s session.
During the sitting, 28 members voted in favour of the nominees, with one senator abstaining and none opposing. Immediately after the vote, the new commissioners were sworn in on the spot, marking the formal start of their constitutional mandate.
The commission had already passed through the required legislative stages, receiving prior approval from the Council of Ministers and the House of the People.
The next step is for the commissioners to elect their official chairperson, enabling them to begin carrying out their critical responsibilities: safeguarding human rights and preventing abuses across the country.
This approval is widely viewed as a significant step forward in strengthening Somalia’s institutional framework for protecting the rights of its citizens.
